Bank Holiday Family Trip to Somerset

Exciting!!! We are going away as an extended family for the early May Bank Holiday! Staying at a cottage in Winscombe, Somerset, in the Mendip Hills. We chose the location for its close proximity to Cheddar Gorge, a place that none of us had ever visited! I find this quite amazing given the frequency of our trips to the West Country, but I guess we were generally powering on through to get to Cornwall or Devon and didn’t linger too long in lovely Somerset. Having said that, I have been to Somerset on a few occasions, but …. not Cheddar Gorge. Geri, our son-in-law admired a photo of it he saw online and that gave us the idea to go.

We are driving Lucy and Baby BT down on Thursday morning in our car. It will no doubt be packed to the rafters with baby stuff although the cottage has a cot and a high chair. No such thing as travelling light with a babe though. Geri is driving down after work on Thursday night and working from home there on Friday (and he really will be) and Daisy is coaching down on Friday night after work. So… we have 2 1/2 days all together and two days when it’s just us, Lucy and Baby BT who will be out and about exploring. Got quite a few places to visit in this lovely area.

We are staying in a cottage which looks lovely and will fit us all in well. Very impressed with how reasonably priced it has been – around £300 for our 4 night break for 5 adults. With a baby, self catering works really well and Bob and I will be happy babysitters if the kids want to go out for dinner.

Quite apart from our visit to Cheddar Gorge, the Caves, the cheese shops (CHEESE!!!!), wWe also plan to visit/tour a cider and brandy farm. I guess there will have to be some tastings there too…. Glasonbury deserves a day – the Tor, The Abbey, the White Spring and the Chalice Well…… there’s some stately homes, the Mendip Hills…. The weather looks reasonable so we are very hopeful of an amazing time.
